I just got a brand new artisan stand mixer and had a question for all of you experts.
If I am mixing anything other than a very thin batter the mixer seems to be making a hammering noise with the tilting portion of the mixer kind of thumping back and forth as it mixes. I'm not sure whether this is something to be concerned about or just a normal part of the mixing.
It's kind of difficult to explain but I'm thinking either there is something wrong with the mixer or there really is supposed to be a little give in the tilting piece that causes it too "jump" a bit when mixing stiffer doughs.
Any help would be appreciated and please ask me to clarify if I'm not making sense.
Thanks! -Mrs Witt |

Welcome to the forum, MrsWitt!
There is some give to the tilt heads between the mixer head and the neck. They're held together by a hinge pin, which you can see if you tip the mixer on its side and look up underneath the hollow of the neck. It's normal for heavy batters or doughs to cause the head to wobble around a bit, which can also cause a 'bumping' noise. Make sure your motor head is in the lock position, and you may also want to check that the hinge pin is tightened. Here's a video link to show you how to do that:

If you're making heavy mixtures like bread dough, it's also important to be sure you're following all the instructions for yeast dough: only the dough hook, only on speed 2, and for only about 7 minutes total (mixing/kneading).
The only other thing I can think of is to check your beater to bowl clearance. If it's too low, the beater can hit the bottom of the bowl while mixing, which could also be causing the thumping sound. Here's a video for that:

If none of this works, you may want to call our customer service center: 800-541-6390. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! I checked the hinge pin and it did seem a little loose. I will have to try it out with the adjustment when I make bread this weekend. I will certainly give customer service a try if I continue to have problems.
Thanks again. |

| Thanks for that, Quinn. My Artisan does the same thing. It's not enough to alarm me, but it's there. I'm certain the dough hook is clearing the bowl, but I'll check that hinge pin thingie. After I watch the vid. |
