Hi,
I have an opportunity to buy a K5-A or a K5SS. The K5SS is four years old and I can't figure out the age of the K5-A.
The K5SS is 325 watts and a lot newer than the K5-A.
Does anyone know if the gears in the K5SS are metal as opposed to plastic?
We will be making bread with one of these. Which is better suited for kneading bread dough.
Any information and advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike |

Both the K5SS and the K5A have a combination of nylon and metal gears. Depending on how the previous owners have cared for them, if they're in good shape now and have been taken care of, as long as you follow all proper use and care instructions, especially for bread making, either one should be very durable and last you many more years.

I think I'll go with the K5-A. If I get the serial number would any of you good folks be able to give me an idea when it was made?
How might I get a manual for it?
Will the attachments that work on the K5SS also work on the K5-A? If "some will and some won't" does anyone have a list of which ones will fit and work? (Can you tell I'm excited about getting this mixer)? Guess I have KA fever.
Does it have an adjustment screw for the beater attachments?
Sorry to bore you folks.
As always, thank you,
Mike |

I'm glad to hear that you're so excited about getting your mixer, Mike! My color was on backorder when I bought it, so I had to wait a few weeks to get it, and it was AGONY!! But worth the wait...
I don't think we'll be able to tell you the age based on the serial number, since most of the older models didn't have coded serials, just had sequential numbers. As far as the accessories, everything is interchangeable between the K5A and the K5SS. However, we don't recommend using the Pasta Maker Plates (SNFGA), or the Grain Mill Attachment (KGMA) on the older model mixers like the K5A because these two attachments operate at the highest speed, and can put undue stress on the motor. The older models don't have solid state motors, so they can't support the power exerted on the mixer by these high-speed attachments. But all other attachments will work with the older models.
Lastly, I'm not sure about a beater adjustment screw. Depending on the age of it, it may or may not have one, but if it does, it would be underneath the motor head in the front, where the head meets the neck. It's very tiny.
Hope you get your mixer soon!!!!
